Local Firm provides rations for frontline troops: A West Kent Food Company are proving the saying 'An Army Marches on It's Stomach' as new ration packs are being trialled on front-line troops in Afghanistan. Tackling the science skills gap: A new £1.6 million resource centre aims to deal with the issue of skills shortages for science industries. Kent Science Research Centre, in Sittingbourne, is a partnership between industry, local authorities and academic bodies and is training a new generation of technicians. [WATCH]
Winner named in the Kent Innovation Challenge: Seventy-one entrants were after the £20,000 prize for winning the Kent Innovation Challenge. Nineteen of those business ideas made the initial shortlist and were invited to present their ideas to a ‘Dragons’ Den’ panel of experts, including KOS Media business editor Tony Patey. Out of that-nerve-racking experience emerged five finalists whom the judges believed all had the potential to quickly grow their businesses. The five all had to give a second presentation on April 3 at the 20:20 event at Detling before the final winner was named. [WATCH]
Kent's 2020 business exhibition: It’s the one-day event of the year you can bet just about everyone who is anyone in Kent business will be there – Kent’s 2020 business to business exhibition which this year attracted a record 3,500-plus visitors and a record 350 stands.Everyone agreed it gets better each year, and there were very few times when people on the stands were able to relax and have a coffee on their own. But all said it was worthwhile – even the Kent Circus School said it had to field a constant stream of visitors.There were some discussions about whether it should become a two-day event, because there is so much to see and do, but at its present size it might lose its impact. That could be an idea for when it gets mega, which at the present rate of growth might not be long.The speakers were ex-BBC director general Greg Dyke, Professor Richard Scase business forecaster, entrepreneur Karen Darby, business advisor Alan Knight, BT consultant Graham Whitehead and historian Dr David Starkey. Kent Mindful Employer: Kent Mindful Employer is an initiative to help small to medium enterprises manage mental wellbeing in the workplace. The aim is for local employers to set up networks to support each other in better understanding of the issues that cause stress or loss of mental wellbeing. Businesses who have successfully retained valuable staff can offer advice and guidance to others. The scheme was launched in Devon in 2004 and after proving an enormous success initiative is being introduced to Kent this month. Developments in Folkestone's Creative Quarter: Over the past three years the Creative Foundation has been acquiring control of buildings in Folkestone's Old High Sreet and Tontine Street and then refurbishing them to a high standard. There are now about 25 retail shops and creative industries in the area operating under the Creative Foundation banner. The Foundation rents the buildings to these businesses at lower than commercial rents, which is more sustainable in the long run. Reporter, Rob Livingstone meets Peter Bettley of Folkestone Creative Quarter who explains more about the scheme and talks about the Performing Arts and Business Centre, which is due to open in September 2008.
